Light Hall School – Sixth Form Lounge
A sixth-form space can do more than give students somewhere to study.
At Light Hall School, the aim was to create a lounge that felt more mature, more independent and more appealing to older students — while also helping the school present a stronger sixth-form environment to prospective pupils.
The brief called for a space that felt noticeably different from the rest of the school. Polycopy helped develop the overall look and feel through design inspiration and mood boards before planning a practical layout for the room.
A mix of soft seating and more functional furniture was used to give students different ways to use the space throughout the day. Informal seating supports socialising and downtime, while tables and more structured areas provide somewhere for independent study and collaborative work.
The layout was designed to balance those different uses without making the room feel divided, helping create one coherent sixth-form environment rather than a series of separate zones.
Durable finishes and contemporary furniture gave the lounge a more grown-up identity, while still being practical enough for everyday school use.
The completed space gives Light Hall School a sixth-form lounge that supports both study and social time, while helping reinforce a stronger sense of independence and ownership for older students.
For schools, sixth-form spaces can also play an important role in how the wider post-16 offer is perceived.
