Abbeyfield School – SEN Hub Refurbishment
No two students use an SEN space in quite the same way.
At Abbeyfield School in Northampton, the aim was to create a dedicated SEN hub that could adapt throughout the day — supporting teaching, regulation, one-to-one work, ELSA sessions and movement-based activities within one joined-up environment.
Polycopy worked with the school’s SEN and operations teams to understand how the space would actually be used before developing the furniture layout.
A mix of seating styles was introduced, including traditional classroom chairs, wobble stools and soft seating. This gives staff more flexibility to choose seating that suits different students, activities and levels of support.
The layout was deliberately kept open rather than filling every available area with furniture. Dedicated teaching, regulation and support zones were created while retaining enough clear floor space for sensory circuits and movement activities when required.
Colour and finishes were considered alongside the furniture. Greens, earthy tones and subtle yellow accents helped give the SEN hub its own identity while creating a calmer environment that avoided feeling overly clinical or stimulating.
The completed hub gives Abbeyfield School a flexible SEN environment that can change depending on the student, activity or situation, while providing staff with clearly defined spaces for different types of support.
Polycopy works with schools across Leicester, Leicestershire and the Midlands on education refurbishment, classroom furniture and complete learning space fit-out projects. From initial ideas and space planning through to furniture selection, flooring, decoration, delivery and installation, we can help create practical, flexible environments that work better for both students and staff.
Our experience covers a wide range of education spaces, including classrooms, sixth form areas, SEN hubs, dining spaces, staff rooms and breakout areas.
