Creating a New Extra Provision Unit at Lowe’s Wong Junior School

Case Study Overview | Polycopy    Overview

Lowe’s Wong Junior School required the creation of a dedicated Extra Provision Unit, designed to provide a practical, comfortable and supportive learning environment for pupils with additional needs.

The project involved refurbishing and adapting multiple internal areas, including classrooms, a sensory room, meeting room, reception space, toilet block, storage areas and entrance zones. External improvements were also included to improve access, safety and site security.

Case Study Vision | Polycopy    The Vision

The school needed a complete refurbishment package that would transform existing rooms into a purpose-built provision area.

The aim was to create a space that would:

  • Support pupils with additional needs
  • Provide calm, practical and flexible learning areas
  • Improve access between classrooms and support spaces
  • Include a dedicated sensory room
  • Offer improved storage, furniture and resources
  • Upgrade toilet and entrance facilities
  • Strengthen external access and site security

Case Study Outcome | Polycopy    The Outcome

The completed Extra Provision Unit provides Lowe’s Wong Junior School with a refreshed, practical and purpose-adapted environment.

The new space offers:

  • Improved classroom layouts
  • A dedicated sensory room
  • Better access between learning and support spaces
  • Durable, easy-to-maintain flooring
  • Upgraded toilet facilities
  • Improved storage and furniture provision
  • Safer external access and secure fencing

The refurbishment has helped create a more suitable setting for pupils who need additional support, while giving staff a functional and well-equipped space to deliver specialist provision.

Case Study Solution | Polycopy    The Solution

A full refurbishment programme was delivered across the unit.

Classrooms

Both classrooms were redecorated and fitted with new LVT flooring. Existing window sills were replaced or re-tiled, shelving and fans were removed, and walls were made good where required.

Classroom 1 was adapted with a new doorway into the sensory room, helping create a more connected and flexible learning environment. New sink areas, cupboards, splashbacks and furniture were also supplied.

Sensory Room

The sensory room was decorated and fitted with carpet tiles to create a softer, calmer space. A new door was installed to connect it directly with Classroom 1, while the existing curtain was replaced with a proper door. Soft seating and sensory equipment were also supplied.

Meeting Room and Storage

The meeting room was redecorated, carpeted and furnished with tables, chairs and storage. A new door was installed to improve the functionality of the space.

Storage areas were decorated and fitted with open cupboards and shelving above, providing practical space for books, teaching materials and resources.

Toilet Block

The toilet block was refurbished with new decoration, anti-slip vinyl flooring, floor-to-ceiling cubicles, new hand dryers and updated toilet facilities. The existing urinal was replaced with a toilet to better meet the school’s requirements.

Entrances and External Works

Entrance areas were refreshed with new flooring, including entrance matting, carpet tiles and anti-slip vinyl. The wooden ramp to the second entrance was replaced, improving access into the unit.

Externally, a section of green mesh fencing and a twin-leaf lockable gate were installed to support safeguarding and secure access.
