How Does Paper Benefit Our Society & The Environment?
Posted: 17 May 2022
The first in a series of posts busting the myths about paper!
Well-managed forests bring multiple benefits for society.
Without the paper industry, many areas of forest land wouldn't even exist. Our suppliers are committed to sustainable forest management and reforestation projects. So how does the production of paper support our society and the environment around us?
1. Paper Production Provides Jobs
Forests provide more than 86 million green jobs globally and support the livelihoods of many more people.1 Forests can also have recreational and cultural importance.
2. Forest Lands Protect from Natural Disasters
They provide wood products and renewable energy, natural carbon capture and storage, and other ecosystem services such as controlling floods and droughts, reducing erosion risks and protecting watersheds that are a source of our water.2
3. Forestry Supports Natural Biodiversity
The vast majority of terrestrial biodiversity is found in the world’s forests. Together, they contain more than 60,000 different tree species and provide habitats for 80% of amphibian species, 75% of bird species and 68% of mammal species. About 60% of all vascular plants are found in tropical forests.1
