Not all shredders are equal...

Posted: 09 Sep 2019

There's been some alarming news about data breaches in large companies recently, resulting in some hefty fines under GDPR regulations.  These have been breaches in digital data security, but it can happen with printed data and in smaller companies very easily and your responsibilities are the same.

How are you ensuring sensitive printed data is destroyed when it's no longer needed?

Is your shredder up to the job or is it groaning under the strain following years of overwork for its specification, and years of not being maintained?

Here's an idea.  Treat your data security procedures to a new shredder, using Pete's Top 7 Shredders to select the model that best suits the demands you're likely to place on it.

Whilst you are looking at Pete's selection, keep these reasons for shredding in-house in your mind:

1. It's a legal requirement that sensitive data is either stored securely or, when it is no longer required, destroyed so that it can't get into the wrong hands.

2. If you shred it yourself, with an appropriate shredder, you have the confidence of knowing it has been done.  You don't have to deal with that lingering worry that someone may have taken it away but not destroyed it properly.

3. You can have control over where the shredded paper goes next, so you can make sure it gets recycled.  The shreddings could go to a recycling centre for re-pulping or they could be used in packaging or as animal bedding.  You choose!

4. When you have a document sort-out you can shred the unwanted items straight away instead of having to store them, which takes up valuable space and can represent a fire risk.

5. It keeps your customers and your employees happy.  You hold sensitive data about both.  If they have the confidence it is being destroyed properly once it is no longer required, it reinforces their trust in you.

6. Shredding unwanted documents helps to secure your business from potential fraud and industrial espionage.
